A Once in a Lifetime Performance
A Once in a Lifetime Performance
In a BCC production, the actors' identities are kept secret from one another and the public until the first performance. Along the way, each actor rehearses privately with the director to develop meaningful characters, movement, and everything they'll need for a vibrant performance.
At a highly anticipated Opening Night performance, the actors arrive as audience members to take seats in the theater and remain anonymous until they enter their first scene. Audience members share in the revelation of each moment as the actors play a fully staged production together for the first time.
We are gathering resources (time, space, money!) to edit and present the documentary of the BCC: Romeo&Juliet production process. Interested in producing a BCC production or workshop? Please reach out.
On September 26th, 2016 Along the Way presented the culmination of the first BCC process with the Midwest premiere of Romeo&Juliet by playwright Scott Palmer. This succinct adaptation of Romeo and Juliet offers pointed and exhilarating additions to Shakespeare's story. When Romeo's best friend Mercutio is killed as a result of the family feud, his grief-stricken lover Benvolia, and the audience, become culpable in the fate of the star-crossed lovers.
Paired with the BCC process, this time-honored Shakespearean tale sizzled as fatal feuds, first kisses, love, life, and death were played by the cast for the first time, in front of a live audience on Opening Night.
Along the Way provides artists with meaningful opportunities to connect their art with charitable giving.
Gilda's Club, one of Chicago’s most beloved nonprofits, was the worthy recipient of proceeds from BCC: Romeo&Juliet. Named for Gilda Radner, the vibrant Saturday Night Live original cast member who passed of ovarian cancer in 1989, Gilda’s Club supports anyone living with cancer, along with their families and friends, as well as those who have lost someone to cancer, with over 350 free programs each month. On behalf of the artists and audiences who came together for BCC: Romeo&Juliet, Gilda's club welcomed Along the Way Productions into the Red Door Society for major donors.
The BCC process requires courage, imagination, and focus on the individual. In rehearsal, actors create bold, meaningful characters without relying on large-group collaboration. In performance, listening and spontaneity are key. The magic of theater is evident as unique and trusting partnerships form instantly.
In BCC: Romeo&Juliet, some actors were surprised to find friends and former colleagues on stage at their side, while the majority met for the first time in life as characters on stage.
